About

The Phantom Pulse is tended by six siblings who share a love for literature, art, and all things spooky. Whether from a shared childhood summer of spectral bug encounters or just the shadowy thoughts that keep us up at night, each of us brings our own haunted experiences to this endeavor.

The editors—Mike, Jess, and Kat—each maintain their own writing habit in speculative fiction and started the magazine as a way to help bolster the contemporary horror community with more publication opportunities for those writing in the field.

You can read about the types of stories that we publish on our Submissions page.

Michael A. Reed, Editor

Michael is an ironically dyslexic English teacher and speculative fiction writer from Las Vegas, Nevada. He probably has more children than you.

Jess Elizabeth Reed, Editor

Jess is a queer writer and game designer of horror, the dark, and the weird. She’s known to haunt the local movie theater and the staff picks section at her favorite book shop.

Kat Reed, Editor

Kat is a queer writer and streamer with a love for all things odd. She is sustained only by coffee, Halloween candy, and stories that scare her socks off.

Sam Ignatiuk, Art Director

Sam is a teacher on hiatus and current stay-at-home mom. She enjoys dancing, crosswords, and magic realism.

Emily Ellis, Data Analyst

Emily is a consistently inconsistent lover of an assortment of hobbies and tasks. She loves to cook, write music and poems, and watch the same movies on repeat. She is a wife and cat mom of three.

Juni Reed, Submissions Reader

Juni is a physical media collecting fanatic with the mindscape of your mysterious relative’s dusty attic. She writes poetry and opens mosh pits at local shows.

Katherine Uhlenkamp, Submissions Reader

Katherine is sometimes a writer, sometimes an artist, depending on their mood. They enjoy folklore, medieval iconography, and following mysterious birds.

Victoria Carl, Submissions Reader

Tori (they/them) writes speculative fiction and teaches writing at DePaul University. A queer runaway from the American South, they especially love stories about ghosts, home, and long-repressed anxieties bubbling from below.
